Why I Started DayZero USA

I always dreamed of starting a blog but I never really felt like I had something “blog-worthy” to write about. I revisited the idea a few weeks ago and found this informative article over at DollarSprout. That article really made blogging seem like something that could be done fairly easily and I was inspired to give it a try. All that was needed was an idea, but it took me a while to think of something I felt was lacking and people could get excited about. I thought about all the things I enjoy doing and I’m one of those people who has a ton of hobbies, interests, things I know a little bit about, etc, but none of it really seemed like something that I could get a lot of people excited about.

Skydiving, for instance. I’ve done it more than fifty times and it was a helluva lot of fun. We did formation jumps, night jumps, and even something called the “cross-country” jump. Basically, you’d exit a plane miles away from the airport, immediately deploy your parachute and see who could land the closest. Sadly, I lost more often than I won that particular game. Exciting, right? Sure but who, besides avid skydivers, really want to read a blog about some guy’s past experiences in the sport? Potential skydivers want to actually go jump out of an airplane once but probably never do it again. So I decided that wasn’t a consistently entertaining thing to blog about if I wanted to grow a large audience.

Politics was an automatic “no” because you’d alienate half of your potential readers from your very first post. Stay with me here, folks, I’m getting to a point. I’m probably the last guy on earth who needs to give advice on personal finance. Rarely travel outside of the State of Texas. I’m no fashion mogul as a t-shirt and jeans guy, and I’m an ok mechanic, but nobody wants to read about me tinkering with a mid-2000s Toyota. The list of things I decided not to blog about goes on and on.

Then I realized what it was that connects all of the things I enjoy. People. Specifically, interacting with people and positively impacting their lives. Building on that, I realized that people are the main reason that new businesses succeed or fail. When I thought of all the amazing new businesses in the Corpus Christi area I loved over the years that folded due to a lack of interacting with people, this idea really started to take shape. There have been some truly amazing startups here that haven’t engaged enough people to keep the lights on. Some of these businesses come back several times with new owners, new plans, and the same old lack of customers.

I decided that if I could grow an army of local readers, starting with the South Texas area, and shine a spotlight on new businesses, maybe I could have a positive effect on everyone involved. The name, DayZero, represents a new beginning or the start of a journey to something better.

Simply put, the mission here at DayZero USA, is to bring people together and if that’s not “blog-worthy,” I don’t know what is.
